A filmmaker’s opinion

DO NOT Rush to see August Rush

with 29 comments

August Rush

This film is a giant bundle of cliches which build to the climactical line “Run August, Run.” Enough said. Oh fun fact: the reverend in this movie also played Bubba in Forrest Gump.

Also it has a 37% on Rotten Tomatoes. (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/august_rush/)

  1. I respect your opinion, but i strongly disagree.
True. It is a film of cliché’s. But that IS the point of the film.

It is made to be one of those ‘have faith and it will all come together’ type of films. You’re suppose to watch WITH a sense of imagination, and just get swept away in a world where such hope actually exists.

We all know that the harsh reality we live in cannot, will not and does not allow things like that to happen. But if at any point of the film, the audience feels an inkling of hope that such things might actually happen, it has done its purpose. And therefore, in my opinion, was a success.

  2. To be honest I found this movie trite and overly insipid. It was cliche and artificial. It’s hard to find something worse than an overly sappy love story but this was worse. It gave an illusion of hope that was overly romanticized and idealized; it wasn’t genuine. It felt contrived. The one positive was a descent soundtrack but in general I was not impressed.

  3. I strongly disagree. August rush was exhilarating and passionate. It has love, compassion, and an amazing musical vibe. The singing of Jonathan Reyes Myers was exceptionally beautiful. I give it 5 stars, and two thumbs up.

  4. I very much liked the scene with “Raise It Up,” but the movie on a whole suffered from many written cliches, poorly constructed dialogue, editing issues, directing problems, and basic continuity errors. A few scenes even felt contrived from the start.

So as far as movies go, I believe August Rush must go on the “Meh, whats next?” list for 2007. Sure the message was good and the story had tons of potential, but it just couldn’t push through to a good movie.

With that said I would also put cloverfield on that list (except for 2008)… Which I gave a positive review to.

  5. The movie was great, in my opinion, and it was very cute! I thought the ending could have definitely been done better. The whole movie leads up to the ending and then it just stops and goes right to the credits.

  6. The movie had potential… and cute is fitting… but honestly they needed to either focus more so on August and remove the parents- or develop the parents in a not so convoluted and unbelievable way.

There was a moment where Jonathan Rhys Meyers is running to get the girl… and trust me this scene makes no sense- I cant remember it now… but If you watch the scene I think everyone will agree that there was no need for him t run to where he was going….

Things like this plagued the movie (and its not just an editing error- its a screenplay/story error). Basic almost film school mistakes.

The premise of the film was amazing… the execution not so much.

  7. Ok…So I agree with the vast majority of people who are saying that this movie is too full of cliches, but i just couldn’t help it, i just got caught up in the story, I wanted him to find his parents via music and have a real life. I thought that what August was saying about music being everywhere was absolutely fantastic…so yes there is a run august run scene, yes there is a large group of street tramps headed up by robin williams, and yes there is a cheesy romance, but I theroughly enjoyed every moment of it. except the cello playint, it was blantantly fake and could have been covered up a tad bit better than what they did, the strings didn’t match the sounds and the fingers were moving too slow for the beat…

  8. i respect your opinon, but think it is way off.
this movie has got to be one of the greatest movies i have seen in a while.
yes, its perdictable, but its supposed to be.
this film touched some people in cluding me, and has brought back the meaning to what some people believe in. every body lets something guide their life wheither its sports, or art, for this movie, and for me, its music. and i think it has shown that.

  10. August Rush is a beautiful movie..it’s a fantasy, a love story..a story of hope and passion. It’s not filled with four letter words, sex & fart jokes or political crap …it’s actually an entertaining escape which is hard to come by these days.

  12. Oh you disappointed me here…

how can you say this movie wasn’t good…

the story did lack a little creativity but the sensational music built up for that. Are you trying to say that the church scene didn’t give you goosebumps?

  18. It’s really too bad that you did not appreciate this movie to nearly the same degree that so many others did.
It is a movie for a reason, not a documentary. Not everything has to be possible, it’s just ment to sweep you off your feet.

And by the way, “Run August, run!” was NOT by any means the most important line in the movie. Corny, yes. I agree. But that doesn’t set the whole movie back just because of one offset line.

  19. AUGUST RUSH ROCKS YOUR FACE OFF!!! so does worship..=)

your mom...sorry..i just don't want to give out my name...=)

  20. I disagree very much.
August Rush is supposed to make you think. It’s beautiful… And about Forrest Gump, I personally hate that movie but my family thinks it’s beautiful. And doesn’t someone say, “run, forrest, run!!!” falls under same catigory, but MUCH BETTER than Forrest Gump. Much.

  21. From the very moment I saw the previews for this beautiful story, I knew I had to witness it; and when I did not get to see it in theatres I waited until the day it was released on to DVD and “rushed,” no pun intended, to the store to buy it. As I watched I was captivated from the very spiritually inclined beginning with the proclaimed philosophy and livelihood of music, right up until the beautiful, however abrupt, musical ending! It is truly inspirational and appeals to a wide variety of audiences, including young children (hence the cleches so they can follow it with more interest and ease). Overall I took this movie for what it was; spiritually uplifting and musically inspiring! The August character, to me seemed to truly be an allusion to Mozart, with his wacky Mozart hair-do! And when the film brings this to your attention in the church with the Organs (the perfect instrument to use for the climactic scene), it is truly a beautiful gift from God, to have that ability and be able to communicate it; truly awesome! This movie goes down into my top favourites.

  22. Some of you disagree with me and that is fine but my gripe is not with the story. I was beyond excited for this movie to come out and I was sorely disappointed in the amateur I’m an undergrad in film school mistakes apparent in this movie.

The idea was fantastic. I loved the scene in the church. The rest was just incredibly poorly executed.

By the way after some research I have learned that most of the comments on my blog have been posted by the August Rush Viral PR campaign… thats a low one guys… very low indeed.

  23. Haha…I just wanted to check up to see any responses to my posting. That is fairly dissapointing about the ad campaigning Eric, however somewhat amusing as well…this movie is still beautiful; especially to me because I love everyhting about music and its facilitation.

    Peace!

  24. It’s a so low to lie just to put your opinion above the others…

The problem is not that the movie is cliche or not, the problem is within our souls , `cause nowadays people have gone too far and don’t understand that the truth is within the small things.

    The Movie is BEAUTIFUL !

  25. I officially LOVE AUGUST RUSH!!!! One, the music is AMAZING and I can listen to it over and over and over again. Two, I play a musical instrument, so I have an appreciation for music. Three, Freddie (august/evan) is so cute!!!!

    HEY!

    May 5, 2008 at 11:33 pm

  26. how can you guys say that August Rush is a COPY of others?!!!! i know where you live, (evil person) and once i devise a plan, I’m gonna gnaw your face off, don’t you think for a moment i wouldn’t dare…

To tell you the truth, this movie awakened something in me that’s been asleep for years. My favorite by far. And even if it did seem a little “fake”, it was in a GOOD way. They did have trouble, my “friend”; i assure you. Maybe you didn’t see the whole movie, eh? I thought the end was good too; with the words, “All you have to do, is listen”.

And the Music like no other.

  27. I liked the movie very much. I loved the music, the hope, the determination, the positiviness, the actors, the happy end. I just felt very good after seeing the movie and that’s why it is in the top of my movie list.
Tip: The Cure with Brad Renfro. (The end is not happy, but it gave me the same very good feeling.)

  29. hahah, I love all the strong opinions. I happen to come across this post after searching for some August Rush images, and seen the heading DO NOT RUSH, I disagree.

I myself loved the movie, but also realize it’s a movie and is nothing more then entertainment value. I was entertained.
I loved the story and emotion and a big fan of music and love storys. Cliche’s don’t drive me to express myself like it’s the end of the world, just other peoples fanaticism. It was a movie, not a book on life. I was so inspired after seeing the movie I did a reedit to one of the dialouges scenes from the movie, layered on top of a Deadly Avengers track that just fit it perfect and its really a story of hope and not giving up. Regardless of who trying to slam you

    The Reedit incase anyone cared
